FIGHT PROCRASTINATION AND LAZINESS OF STUDENTS
One of the major sources of academic failure among Nigerian student is PROCRASTINATION which is a seed of LAZINESS. Procrastination among students has now become a normal thing. Students happens to be the greatest procrastinator of all times, they could avoid or procrastinate a task for months and rush it up in 2-3 straight sleepless nights or end up discarding them. Although sometimes the night rush works but sometimes it could fail and it will be too late to make up or consider back-up plan not to talk of the mental stress exerted on the the student.
Dealing with Procrastination can be a great task especially when the student has that as an habit or addiction, though it is better to defeat just like addiction when it is small. Though no rehabilitation is required to defeat procrastination, it need willingness, courage and more of actions to eradicate it.
HERE ARE 7 TIPS TO FIGHT PROCRASTINATION AND LAZINESS OF STUDENTS
1.) DISCOVER IT IS WRONG
Discovering that procrastination is bad is a very important key in doing away with it. One wont be able to stop something if they do not know what they where doing is bad.
Discover that it is bad and willingly wish to stop it. And the rest will be a work over.
2.) WRITE DOWN YOUR GOAL
This could be a daily, weekly or monthly goal. It could also be a to-do list which you make and check. If the goals seem bogus, break them down into smaller sub-goals.
e.g Goal for today – Write An Article/Research work
sub-goal: a) Gather Resources b)Validate c) Combine d) Publish e) Review
Your Goal must be realistic and time bound as no time goals are easily shifted to “anytime”.
3.) IDENTIFY THE DISTRACTION AND DO AWAY WITH IT.
Every student is liable to at least one source of distraction, from social media, to texting (whatsapp the most addicted messenger), drinking, chilling out with friends, watch movies, TV shows play video games etc.
There is definitely something bound to keep you distracted from academic activities. Sometimes students are distracted by another academic activity. For instance, if a student is a lover of a particular subject, he tend to get distracted and focuses on that particular subject.
You need to identify your biggest distractions and time-wasting activities, and then try to eliminate them to enable you get work done.
If you are distracted by surrounding noise, classmates, friends in the library etc. It is important you invest in good quality noise canceling head phones which you use when you need to concentrate on the job. This will block out background or surrounding noise and prevent others from disturbing you (if you are a music lover or get distracted by music, this may not be a good idea for you).
For social media distraction you could use a plethora online tools that to temporarily block websites for a set duration of time.
4.) IDENTIFY AND PRIORITIZE CRUCIAL WORK
Identification and prioritization of the most important job is very crucial to finally beating procrastination. It involves listing of the jobs in scale of preferences and attacking the one on-top first and gradually work down the list. As you go you discover the work gets more easier, hence reducing the tendency to procrastinate.
5.) GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK AND TREAT
Another way to fight procrastination is to Break works into pieces and give yourself a treat after accomplishing each work. This could be in form of a tea break, watch a tv show, play a video game etc. but all this should be done in a very little time (15-20 mins). This sounds a little like procrastinating but if treated well, you would solve the tasks in no time.
6.) GET MOTIVATED AND INSPIRED
You need to search for what motivates and inspires you to get a job done. Sometimes it might mean soing things in an awkward way. For instance, i am able to read while with friends talking and listening to music (funny). You might need to get involved with the job to be done so you get more interest in it. Just find your way of being inspired to do the task and procrastination will definitely be history.
7.) FORCE YOURSELF INTO ACTION
If you want to do a job and the urge, motivation and ispiration is not there, you might just have to force the body to work against the mind. Sometimes once the job is started, the flow of work will continue and the mind will catch-up with the b ody in no time.
Start dedicating yourself to getting things done at the right time,set a goal to be motivated, and watch the results materialize when you start to take action.Procrastination can definitely be cured.
